I witnessed the deaths of three of my siblings and the horrible beating of my father by the Austro-Hungarian military. At the age of 17, I traveled alone across a continent and an ocean. I worked in factories and eventually owned my own business. Don’t you dare tell me I would be better off in assisted living. It is 1988, and 79-year-old Anna Sopko is assaulted when her home is broken into. Much to her indignation, her three children think she would be safer in a retirement home. Her older daughter announces that she has advanced-stage ovarian cancer, and on her deathbed, knowing that her mother had regrets about the way she left Czechoslovakia, she tells her to go back before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Anna’s niece Danika reveals her illegal status when the toddler she is a nanny for is hit by a car. Anna’s son Peter, a lawyer, tries to help Danika while juggling the care of his mother, his own three children, and his wife Theresa, who has untreated bipolar disorder and is nearing psychosis - at his sister’s funeral. Grieving, Anna ends up accompanying her deported niece back to “the old country,” where she is faced with resolving the regrets of her youth, including a jilted, lost love and the strange death of her sister over sixty years ago.

This book touched me in many ways. As an American descendent of Eastern European heritage, I often wondered about what motivated my parents’ actions. The glimpse into Czechoslovakian history and culture explains so much. I left home, as Anna and Danika did; a young women with a boy I barely knew, to follow my dreams. My Mother’s reaction was so similar to those portrayed—the family structure so close to my own. The dinner scenes and religious rituals brought back memories of family safety. Then like Theresa, I too struggled with manic depression. The highs and lows are familiar. Then to have it all finish with forgiveness makes this book very special for me.Product details

What a fantastic read! I could not put in down, so I read it in two sittings. A story from the heart that made laugh and cry. Thank you for sharing your gift of writing with the world, Tanya Savko.
Tanya masterfully weaves a story of family, and all that that entails misunderstandings, secrets, shame, devotion, resentment, mistakes, and all-encompassing love. I could not put the book down!
I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story about the richness of family, made richer by characters that are endearingly imperfect. It is a tale that weaves together continents, cultures, generations and personalities into a beautiful tapestry of love and hope. What I found most comforting is the realization that no matter what we are struggling with in life, there really is enough (of whatever we need) to go around - even if we are a mess and our family is far from perfect. Thank you, Tanya!
